Stop Building 60-Minute eLearning Courses

I know—the stakeholders are demanding it. They want to “cover everything.” But let’s be real: when was the last time you sat through a 60-minute module and actually retained more than 10% of what was said?

Exactly.

As designers and consultants, our job is to fight for the learner’s attention, not to serve as an information dump.

If you’re stuck in the “everything but the kitchen sink” cycle, try this: Shift your focus from “content coverage” to “performance support.”

Instead of a one-hour course, can you solve the problem with:

  • A 3-minute performance checklist?
  • A 90-second video tutorial?
  • A simple job aid they can reference while they work?

When we build shorter, we build smarter. We respect the employee’s time, and frankly, we get better results.

What’s the shortest piece of training you’ve ever built that actually moved the needle on performance?
